Software Engineer

Our machine is only as good as the software steering it. You will build the systems our operators rely on in the field — the control interface, the live telemetry pipeline and the tooling we use to analyse a bore after the fact. This is embedded-adjacent, real-time work where a dropped packet is a stopped machine.

About the role

Software at Swissloop Tunneling is not a side concern. During a competition run the machine is fully underground and the only thing connecting the team to it is our own telemetry stack. You will own parts of that stack end to end, from the protocol on the wire to what the operator sees on screen.

You will work alongside the navigation, electrical and mechanical subteams. Expect to spend time in the machine hall, not only at a desk — the fastest way to understand a sensor is to hold it.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain the operator control interface used during live boring runs
  • Design the telemetry pipeline that streams sensor data from the machine to the surface
  • Build analysis tooling that turns raw bore data into actionable engineering decisions
  • Work directly with the electrical and navigation subteams to define system interfaces
  • Take part in integration testing and on-site test campaigns

What you bring

  • Studying computer science, electrical engineering or a related field at ETH or UZH
  • Solid experience in at least one of TypeScript, Python, C++ or Rust
  • Comfortable with version control, code review and writing software other people maintain
  • Interest in real-time systems, robotics or industrial control
  • You do not need tunnelling experience — nobody had any when they started

How to apply

Send your CV and a short note about which part of the machine interests you. No motivation letter required — we reply to everyone.
