Navigation Systems & Control Engineer
Steering a tunnel boring machine underground is a sensor-fusion problem with very little margin. You will develop the guidance and control stack that keeps our machine on line and on grade, fusing inertial, optical and hydraulic feedback into a single position estimate.
About the role
Groundhog Beta carried 85 sensors and six hydraulic degrees of freedom. Project Marmot raises the target: we want the machine to hold its line with substantially less operator input. That is your problem to solve.
You will work closely with the software subteam on the interfaces and with the mechanical subteam on the actuation hardware — this role sits deliberately between the two.
What you will do
- Develop sensor fusion for machine position and attitude estimation underground
- Design and tune closed-loop control for the hydraulic steering hexapod
- Model machine–soil interaction and validate models against test-bore data
- Define the accuracy and calibration requirements for the navigation sensor set
- Support test campaigns and post-run trajectory analysis
What you bring
- Studying robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering or similar
- Working knowledge of state estimation (Kalman filtering) and control theory
- Experience with Python, MATLAB or C++ for simulation and implementation
- Ability to reason about a physical system, not only about an algorithm
How to apply
Send your CV and a short note about which part of the machine interests you. No motivation letter required — we reply to everyone.
