Mechanical Design Engineer
From the cutting head to the propulsion frame, our machine is a chain of load-carrying assemblies that have to be manufacturable by a student team on a student budget. You will design those assemblies in CAD, verify them by hand and by FEA, and then help build them.
About the role
Very few student projects let you take a load-carrying structure from a blank CAD document to a manufactured part that then gets hammered by 200 kN of propulsion force. This one does.
You will be given a subsystem and real responsibility for it. Our technical leads review your work; they do not do it for you.
What you will do
- Design machine subassemblies in CAD from concept through to manufacturing drawings
- Verify designs analytically and with FEA against the relevant load cases
- Select bearings, seals, drives and hydraulic components
- Prepare manufacturing documentation and liaise with our manufacturing partners
- Assemble, fit and test what you designed
What you bring
- Studying mechanical engineering, civil engineering or similar
- Confident in a parametric CAD system (Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Fusion or similar)
- Understanding of machine elements, tolerancing and manufacturing processes
- Willingness to spend real hours in the workshop
How to apply
Send your CV and a short note about which part of the machine interests you. No motivation letter required — we reply to everyone.
