Geotechnical Engineer

Soil is the one component of our system we do not design. You will characterise the ground we bore through, predict its behaviour, and translate that into requirements for the erosion, propulsion and lining subsystems.

About the role

This role has an outsized effect on the machine. The ground conditioning strategy you define determines whether the cutting head clogs; the face-pressure model you build determines whether the surface above the bore stays where it is.

It is also one of the few roles where your competition work maps almost directly onto the professional practice of trenchless construction.

What you will do

  • Characterise soil conditions at our test sites and at the competition site
  • Model excavation stability, face pressure and settlement behaviour
  • Define ground conditioning strategy, including foam and slurry parameters
  • Derive subsystem requirements from expected ground conditions
  • Document findings for the technical report and the white paper

What you bring

  • Studying civil or environmental engineering with a geotechnical focus
  • Familiarity with soil mechanics and standard laboratory characterisation methods
  • Interest in tunnelling, underground construction or trenchless technology
  • Comfortable working with incomplete data and stating your assumptions

How to apply

Send your CV and a short note about which part of the machine interests you. No motivation letter required — we reply to everyone.
