The Tunneling Times

Monthly Swissloop Tunneling Newsletter

Another month, another newsletter. This time, we bring you more exciting news about the development of our newest machine “Groundhog Gamma”. On the mechanical & civil side of the engineering division, the first parts for the machine that were designed and ordered have arrived, being ready to be assembled alongside the parts that will arrive shortly in the next few weeks. As almost all members are back from vacation, coinciding with the start of the next semester at university, meetings have ramped back up again, allowing us to come up with detailed plans on what will happen in the next few weeks and months. More standard off-the-shelf parts were ordered for our new machine from partners, which have in the meantime arrived in our workshop at Empa, ready for being installed. Finally, exciting exchanges with Hans Kohler AG, a longtime sponsor of ours, and Axpo happened.

The electronics & software side of the engineering division kept on working on transitioning our software stack to ROS. Further, they made arrangements to be ready for an upgraded control system using new and improved sensors. Lastly, plans have been made and are already in action to transition our electrical system using PLCs from Schneider Electric to Indel products.
