Responsible for integration and functionality of the Robot Operating System (ROS)
Overview
Swissloop Tunneling (SLT), a student project group from ETH Zurich, is seeking a talented and passionate ROS Software Engineer to join our software team of 5-7 members. We are dedicated to developing innovative Micro Tunnel Boring Machines (MTBM) and have been recognized with two second-place finishes and Innovation awards in previous Not-a-Boring competitions. This year, we won the Not-a-Boring competition.
The following requirements outline the optimal parameters we seek for this position. However, all of them can be learned or extended throughout your experience within the team. We encourage you to submit your application even if you don’t think you meet all the criteria. Your reliability, commitment, and passion for innovation are the most valuable traits we look for.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collaborate closely with the backend/frontend software engineers, as well as electrical and control engineers
- Integrate ROS into the existing MTBM software stack
- Make critical decisions on the structure and implementation of the MTBM software
- Implement robust and reusable code, ensuring smooth communication with other software components
- Contribute to our open work culture through short weekly meetings and monthly team events
- Report weekly to Swissloop Tunneling’s advisors through the updates slide deck
- Attend weekly meetings and working sessions
- Actively contribute to building the association’s culture
Qualifications & Skills:
- Outstanding communication and organizational skills
- High availability, commitment to the association’s cause, and active communication
- Aptitude and self-initiative for rapid decision-making and problem-solving
- Nurture a passion for tunneling and scientific research
- Able to maintain a cold spirit when faced with difficulties
- Acute attention to detail
- Strong programming skills in Python/C++
- Proficiency in ROS
- Knowledge of Docker and Ubuntu is a plus
- Studying computer science (or equivalent background)
- Working professionally with industry partners and being willing to adhere to the team’s standards
- Open to providing input on software choices

Workload
The expected workload is estimated to be around 6 hours per week, with approximately one or two hours dedicated to meetings and the rest to individual or group work.
Workplaces
We provide an office and workplace in Zürich at ETH’s Student Project House (SPH) and EMPA in Dübendorf. From day one, you can work independently and take responsibility for your duties and deliverables. The software team normally meets at SPH during weekly meetings.
